Sonny visits with San Antonio College student, Angela Quillian, Deborah Martin from Alamo Colleges and broadcast veteran, Arch Campbell who helped start the Jean Longwith Endowment – a scholarship fund for students seeking a career in broadcasting.

Angela is a former recipient of the Jean Longwith Scholarship. 

Sonny and Arch were in Ms. Longwith’s first class at San Antonio College all those years ago!

About Jean Longwith 1917-2003

Jean Marguerite Longwith, Professor Emeritus of San Antonio College, was a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin with a master’s degree in speech and theatre.

She earned a Master of Fine Arts degree at the University of Iowa in 1950, where she served as a director of television production for the University of Iowa at WOC-TV.

She was chairman of the Speech and Drama Department at Thomas Jefferson High School from 1955 to 1964.

She initiated, designed, and developed the curriculum for the Radio-Television-Film department at San Antonio College, served as General Manager of radio station KSYM-FM, and chaired the department until 1983. In 1985 she served as vice-chairman of the RTF Curriculum Study Committee of the Coordinating Board for Texas Colleges and Universities.

Miss Longwith initiated and secured a charter for the San Antonio Chapter of the International Television Association and served as the first president. She was named as Outstanding Career Woman by the San Antonio Express-News in 1979 and received the Headliner Award in Communication from Women in Communication, Inc. in 1981. She was named Key Woman Educator by Beta Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society in 1985 and received the Members in Print Award from Alpha State, the Delta Kappa Gamma Society in 1986.

She served as president of the San Antonio Branch of the American Association of University Women, 1980-1981 and on the board of the Texas Division of AAUW. She obtained a grant from the American Association of University Women to produce a series of thirty-minute programs called “Women in Action” for cable television.

She was producer and director of the Summer Dance Festival of the City Recreation Department from 1952 to 1969. She was a charter member and president of the Past Presidents of the San Antonio Delta Kappa Gamma Society.

She was a member of the Council of Presidents, Women in Communications, the San Antonio Area of Retired Teachers, and TREDDA. Active in a number of civic organizations, she was appointed to the San Antonio Bicentennial Committee, the San Antonio Fine Arts Commission, and served as Chairman of the San Antonio Cable Television Advisory Committee. She was selected for the Women’s Celebration and the San Antonio Hall of Fame in 1989.

She served as consultant to school districts and senior colleges developing courses in communications. Miss Longwith facilitated workshops for the public and private sector in cable and video production and authored workbooks for seminars.

It goes without saying that Jean Longwith was a remarkable woman who dedicated her life as an educator developing the excellence in all who had the great fortune to receive her guidance, encouragement and expectation!
